I am seeing visible cracks between boards. Why are the individual pieces separating?
The separation is caused by seasonal changes in humidity. When the weather is dry, the wood loses moisture and the boards shrink. Lighter colored woods show cracks more than darker tones. Likewise, wider boards will show larger separation than smaller boards. Most cracks are simply seasonal, showing up more in dry months or cold weather when heating is required. The separation will typically close on its own when humidity returns. Add moisture during dry periods. Some suggestions for adding moisture: boil a pan of water, turn off the bathroom exhaust fan, open the dishwasher after the rinse cycle, put a pan of water in the furnace fan compartment, hang wet laundry to dry in the basement, or simply install a humidifier and run accordingly to maintain a steady moisture level in the house. Manufacturers recommend maintaining a Relative Humidity level of 50% for best results.
